Vitamin K2 The Missing Link to Perfect Health
Saturday, May 10, 2014
Almost a century ago, in the early part of the 20th century, a dentist named Weston A. Price performed some of the most important research in the history of nutrition and health science. As a dentist, he was concerned about the epidemic of dental deformities, like crooked teeth and cavities, so he set out to find traditional societies all over the globe didnt suffer from such problems. Sure enough, he found several "primitive" societies isolated from the industrialized world who, despite a complete lack of dental hygiene, had perfectly straight teeth and little to no tooth decay. And beyond that, chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease were completely absent. He showed that, like all other animals, humans are healthy and robust when they eat, move, and live the way theyre designed. Then, he watched as these healthy societies became civilized, adopted white flour and sugar, and their health declined.
That is Weston A. Price in a nutshell, but I encourage you to read his book "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" for the full story. Although the societies Price studied ate a variety of diets, he noticed something that they all shared... all of these diets were particularly high in three fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, and something he called "Activator X". He determined that these three vitamins were critical and worked in synergy for tooth and bone formation, as well as general health. After returning to America, Price applied what he had learned on his own patients. He used a combination of high-vitamin butter oil (Activator X) and cod liver oil (A and D) to successfully prevent and reverse dental cavities in many of his patients. Pretty amazing huh? These three vitamins, when used in conjunction, can reverse cavities. Fast forward to today... has anyone in the medical profession ever heard of this research? Probably not. To them, crooked teeth are just genetic, and the only way to fix a cavity is to get a filling. Oh how wrong they are...
Price never identified this mystery vitamin he called "Activator X". Weve all heard of vitamins A and D, but Activator X seems to have been lost in time. Until now, that is. Science has now uncovered its true identity, and research is beginning to confirm what Price learned almost a century ago. Activator X is... Vitamin K2.
You could obviously start eating the foods listed above, that will surely help. Get a hold of some local, pastured eggs, or some grass-fed butter like Kerrygold. Theyre high in vitamins A and K2, plus they taste good. You could also get a K2 supplement (menatetranone, or MK-4, is the one you want). That would likely help; after all, it worked in the osteoporosis studies. But remember, since they work in synergy, A, D, and K2 function best when theyre in balance with each other... there must be a way to get all three of them in one place. And there is! Remember the butter oil/cod liver oil blend I mentioned that Dr. Price used in his practice? Well, lucky for us, Green Pasture produces that very same product today. Sure its a little expensive, but its top quality and it makes getting your A, D, and K2 extremely easy. Now you dont have to choke down goose liver. Youre welcome.
So go out and get your K2, however it is you choose to do it. Eat goose liver, pig out on fish eggs, whatever you want to do... just do it! You cant afford not to. Your arteries and bones will thank you. And you will thank them. And you will both live a long, healthy, happy life together, just you and your arteries and bones. And hopefully a spouse... and her arteries and bones. And kids with perfect faces and teeth. Maybe grandkids... okay you get the point. Get your K2 on!

As I explained in my previous post on dairy fat, vitamin K2 is not the vitamin K youve heard of... thats K1. Vitamin K2 is a whole different animal. Thankfully, we now have some exciting modern research touting the benefits of K2. The research generally falls into two categories, let me know if any of this sounds familiar...
Cardiovascular Disease (heart disease and stroke)
There have been observational studies done in humans, and a few controlled, clinical trials in rats. In humans, high dietary K2 intake is strongly associated with a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk (1, 2, 3). In one study, men with the highest K2 intake had a whopping 51% lower risk of heart disease and a 26% lower risk of death from all causes than men with the lowest K2 intake. There is no such association with K1 intake.
In rats, supplementation of vitamin K2 has been shown to prevent, and even reverse plaque buildup in the coronary arteries (4, 5). No joke. Reverse plaque buildup. Read the articles, the proof is there. Although this cant quite be extrapolated to humans, it sounds promising doesnt it? Just imagine the headline... "Lipitor Becomes Obselete in Light of Miracle Vitamin". All we need is someone to do the research. And then someone to fight the ensuing big pharma backlash. But perhaps Im getting ahead of myself... suffice it to say, at the very least, K2 prevents plaque buildup.
Bone Development and Maintenance
Vitamin K2 is absolutely essential in infancy and childhood for proper skull development (6, 7). Full skull development allows plenty of space for teeth to grow in straight. In addition, your full cheekbones and straight set of pearly whites will no doubt make you more physically attractive, and lets not underestimate the importance of that (8). This is some key information no parent should go without.
In older adults, several clinical trials have been conducted in which post-menopausal women were given supplemental vitamin K2. A meta-analysis of this research shows that K2 supplementation reduces bone loss and prevents osteoporosis as we age, as well as significantly reduces the risk of incident fractures (9). Does anybody know any grandmas and grandpas out there who are taking K2? I certainly dont. I think its time to change that.
The Big Picture
Lets tie these two ideas together, because they are, in fact, two sides to the same coin. Research shows a clear connection between arterial calcification (plaque buildup) and osteoporosis (10). The two frequently occur together, and both are rooted in the same issue: the failure of the body to use calcium effectively. Allow me to explain... vitamin K2s main function in the body is to deposit calcium in appropriate locations, such as in the bones and teeth, and prevent it from depositing in locations where it does not belong, such as the coronary arteries. Double whammy. Just like Price said. But K2 doesnt work in isolation; modern science also confirms Prices idea that K2 works in synergy with vitamins A and D. We now know, for example, that A and D promote cellular production of a protein called osteocalcin, which, with the help of K2, organizes calcium and phosphorous deposition into bones and teeth. Proper osteocalcin functioning means that your bones and teeth are making the most of the calcium youve got coming in. Then we also have something called matrix GLA protein (MGP), which has the same relationship with A, D, and K2. This protein, however, actively prevents arterial calcification, directly fighting the process that causes cardiovascular disease. Given these mechanisms, it should be no surprise that K2 improves the outcomes in both heart disease and osteoporosis. Looks like Price was on to something eh?

K2 in the Diet
Okay, lets play a game. I tell you the food sources of vitamin K2, and you tell me whether or not the average American is getting enough of it. Ready... set... go! (11,12)

- Grass-fed butter and cream
- Grass-fed milk and cheese
- Free-range egg yolks
- Fish eggs

Vitamin D3 Halts Inflammation to Lower Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Thousands of research studies have demonstrated the powerful health-promoting properties of the prohormone compound, vitamin D3. Researchers publishingin The Journal of Immunology explain the specific molecular and signaling events by which vitamin D inhibits inflammation in the human body. In a very detailed analysis, scientists show that low blood circulating levels of vitamin D do not adequately inhibit the inflammatory cascade necessary to turn off this potentially destructive mechanism.
Low levels of inflammation, normally used by the body to fight pathogenic invaders, become a primary cause of heart disease, diabetes, many cancer lines and Alzheimer’s dementia. Additional evidence reportedin the British Journal of Nutrition demonstrates that adequate vitamin D levels reduce critical markers of cardiovascular health and can lead to significant reductions in body fat in overweight and obese people. It is critical to have your vitamin D level checked, and supplement as necessary to lower inflammation levels and risk of heart disease.
Vitamin D Lowers Inflammation to Prevent Chronic Disease and Stimulate Immune Response Systems

Dr. Elena Goleva, lead scientist from National Jewish Health, found that prior studies with vitamin D show a clear and positive link between blood levels of the prohormone and a variety of different health outcomes. Dr. Goleva and her team looked for specific mechanisms to explain precisely how vitamin D functions at the cellular level to prevent disease in the human body.
Dr. Goleva and her team of researchers noted that vitamin D is a catalyst that initiates “a clear chain of cellular events, from the binding of DNA, through a specific signaling pathway, to the reduction of proteins known to trigger inflammation.” To test how vitamin D acts on immune and inflammatory pathways, team scientists exposed human white blood cells to varying levels of vitamin D and exposed them to an agent known to promote intense inflammatory responses and advance disease processes.
Vitamin D Lowers Inflammatory Markers and Increases Health-Promoting HDL Cholesterol

White blood cells that were incubated with no vitamin D or a solution of 15 ng/mL produced very high levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha. In vivo, these signaling messengers are known to be responsible for the development and progression of cardiovascular disease, certain forms of cancer and dementia. Cells incubated at a concentration of 30 ng/mL and above showed a significantly reduced response, while the highest level of inflammatory inhibition occurred at 50 ng/ml.
Supporting evidence for the health-promoting effect of vitamin D as reported in the journal BMJ shows marked improvement in cardiovascular biomarkers including HDL cholesterol. Additionally, researchers found the hormone-like substance lowered the risk of lipid peroxidation, the process responsible for making LDL cholesterol molecules sticky and prone to form atherosclerotic plaque. They also determined that high circulating levels of vitamin D were associatedwith “significant reductions in fat mass”in overweight and obese people.
There should be no doubt that the millions of people living with grossly sub-optimal vitamin D levels are dramatically increasing their risk of developing a plethora of potentially deadly illnesses. Health-minded individuals will ensure they maintain a circulating blood level of 50 to 70 ng/mL by means of a 25(OH)D blood test to regulate systemic inflammation and fight chronic disease.

Vitamin D Levels Dramatically Lower Cardiovascular Risk
Saturday, April 19, 2014
It has been widely reported that US deaths from cardiovascular disease has recently overtaken cancer as the Number 1 killer of people of all ages. The news media has been quick to blast these headlines everywhere. And the pharmaceutical companies are also quick to tell all who will listen that their latest and greatest drug will lower total cholesterol and LDL-C, thus reducing heart attack risk. If only it were that simple... and true!
The problem is that many recent reports have proven that cholesterol (and even the much maligned LDL-C) are really not your enemy. In fact, they are critical blood components which provide our bodies with the ability to synthesize new cells, form hormones and a large variety of other critical cellular functions. When these levels are artificially reduced, essential molecular duties are limited, and the homeostasis in the body is disrupted. Pharmaceutical makers (and your doctor) love the statin drugs because they predictably lower blood markers in a dose dependent manner. Take this amount of drug, and you will reduce your cholesterol by this amount. In fact, it has been demonstrated that statins help only 1 in 100 people partially avoid a second heart attack, likely through the statins ability to modestly reduce systemic inflammation. All nice and pretty... and thus a multi-billion dollar category of drugs is born.
The latest research is clearly demonstrating that arterial plaque is not directly formed by cholesterol being stuffed into the walls of our arteries, but by a very complex process which is triggered through our immune system through inflammation. Components of our white blood cells known as macrophages are actually the culprit, as they lose their protein coating in a response to arterial inflammation. It are these white blood cell macrophages which create the foamy plagues which plug up the micro openings in the arteries which occur due to excessive abuse in our body. This abuse is caused by a large number of factors, but the short list includes poor dietary factors (ined carbs, fast foods, fried foods) and high blood pressure. From the perspective of our bodies, it is attempting to save our lives, as these micro cracks in the arterial walls could easily lead our bleeding-out. It is ironic that the mechanism used to help us survive is often the same one which leads to our premature demise. Vitamin C is also critical in avoiding the micro cracks, as it assists the body to create collagen which can help to repair the tiny tears in the vessel walls. More about the role of Vitamin C in a future post.
Now that we understand that the local pharmacy does not have the answer to help us avoid cardiovascular disease, how can we eliminate this risk? The simple answer is through eating a proper diet which is low in ined carbs, sugar and especially high-fructose corn syrup and trans-fats and cooked animal fats, maintaining a healthy body weight and correcting the blood level of Vitamin D. OK, the first two we have all heard about, but the Vitamin D component just doesnt seem to get that much media attention. The very latest studies have confirmed that maintaining an optimal Vitamin D blood level of 50 - 70 ng/ml will reduce the chance of developing heart disease by 50%! As this is the primary killer of people in the US and other western countries, wouldnt that merit a major headline? Hard to believe that you probably will never hear of this information. But yet Vitamin D has been demonstrated to help blood vessels to dilate, reduce levels of dangerous triglycerides and reduce inflammatory factors in the blood. By ensuring a proper level of Vitamin D in the blood through either sun exposure (only if less than 50 years old) or supplementation (remember, in a gelcap form), we can cut in half the number of people subjected to heart disease.
If only there were millions to be made by pharmaceutical entities through the sale of Vitamin D, we could save literally millions of lives each year. Good thing you now know this vital information and can begin taking steps to protect your own health.

Importance of Vitamin D for Smokers
Friday, April 11, 2014
Importance of Vitamin D for Smokers | In addition to bone health, recent research reveals about the benefits of vitamin D which is great for health, including preventing cancer. In a recent study revealed that: the benefits of vitamin D in protecting the lungs, especially for those who smoke.
In his study, Nancy E. Lange, MD, MPH, of the Channing Laboratory, Brigham and Womens Hospital studied 626 Caucasian men over a period of 20 years. The study assessed three time periods are completely different between 1984 and 2003. Pulmonary function of each participant was measured using a spirometer.

This study has several limitations, including the observational information. Vitamin D levels are also likely to vary from time to time. Another limitation of this study involved only older men.
Alexander C. White MS, MD, chairman of the committee of the American Thoracic Society Tobacco Action, said: enough or not vitamin D levels in a person, should not overshadow the health risks and dangers associated with smoking. Those who smoke should be aware of the consequences of health problems that may be obtained.
The study is published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Vitamin D Supplements Wont Help Prevent Disease Review
Thursday, April 10, 2014
Low levels of vitamin D have been implicated as a potential cause of diseases ranging from cancer to diabetes. Now an extensive review suggests its really the other way around: Low levels of the "sunshine vitamin" are more likely a consequence -- not a cause -- of illness.
In their review of almost 500 studies, the researchers found conflicting results. Observational studies, which looked back at what people ate or the kinds of supplements they took, showed a link between higher vitamin D levels in the body and better health.
But, in studies where vitamin D was given as an intervention (treatment) to help prevent a particular ailment, it had no effect. The one exception was a decreased death risk in older adults, particularly older women, who were given vitamin D supplements.
"The discrepancy between observational and intervention studies suggests that low [vitamin D] is a marker of ill health," wrote review authors led by Philippe Autier, at the International Prevention Research Institute, in Lyon, France.
Vitamin D is known to play a key role in bone health. Low levels of vitamin D have been found in a number of conditions, including heart disease, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cancer and Parkinsons disease. These findings may explain why so many Americans are currently taking vitamin D supplements.
Its nicknamed the sunshine vitamin because the body produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun (if someone isnt wearing sunscreen). Its also found in some foods, such as egg yolks and fatty fish, and in foods that have been fortified with vitamin D, such as milk.
The current review, published online Dec. 6 in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, looked at 290 observational studies. In these studies, blood samples to measure vitamin D levels were taken many years before the outcome of the study occurred. The review also included results of 172 randomized clinical trials of vitamin D. In randomized trials, some people receive a therapy while others do not.
The observational studies showed a potential benefit from vitamin D. For example, vitamin D was associated with a 58 percent reduced risk of cardiovascular events, a 38 percent decreased risk of diabetes and a 34 percent decreased risk of colon cancer in these studies.
But, when the researchers looked to the randomized clinical trials that used vitamin D as a treatment, they failed to find any effect on disease occurrence or severity from raising vitamin D levels.
However, vitamin D did reduce the risk of dying from any cause in older people taking 800 international units a day, according to the review.
Dr. Shaun Jayakar, an internal medicine and geriatric specialist from St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, said the findings in elderly people "are likely due to a reduction in falls and fractures. Supplementing with vitamin D would lead to stronger bones, which would reduce falls and factures."
Because the majority of interventional trials failed to find any benefit from vitamin D, the reviews authors conclude that low vitamin D levels dont lead to ill health, rather theyre caused by ill health.
They theorize that inflammation that occurs in many illnesses may be what depletes vitamin D levels.
Dr. Robert Graham, an internist from Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said, "This comprehensive review did a really good job at trying to tease out the effects of different study designs, and the findings will be controversial."
He said there are currently five, large ongoing interventional trials that will help to better define vitamin Ds role in disease. However, the results of those studies wont be available for a number of years. Until then, he recommended, "Try to achieve homeostasis [equilibrium]. You dont want to get to a low level of vitamin D."
The Institute of Medicine recommends 600 international units of vitamin D for adults, and 800 international units for people over 70.
Both Graham and Jayakar agreed that those are reasonable supplement levels. Jayakar said that for most people, vitamin D supplements are harmless, but added that "its a pocketbook issue. Almost 50 percent of the population is taking vitamin D supplements. Thats a lot of money for something that likely has no benefit," he said.
Jayakar added that this reviews findings suggest that low vitamin D levels could be used as a marker -- a sign -- of disease in younger people. "If someone isnt feeling well and they have low vitamin D, maybe we should use that to start searching to see if something else is going wrong," he said.
Vitamin D Slashes Cancer and Heart Disease Risk in Half
Monday, March 31, 2014

New information now reveals a clear picture of how this amazing nutrient works at the cellular level while prompting the expression of more than 3000 individual genes to protect us against many lethal forms of cancer and heart disease as well. You can dramatically reduce your risk of illness and extend your healthy lifespan by making sure your blood is saturated at an optimal level with Vitamin D.
Vitamin D Influences our Genes, Cuts Cancer Risk in Half

According to a study published in Genome Research, Vitamin D regulates genes which provide protection against many forms of cancer and autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D specifically binds with these genes to provide a protective shield which dramatically reduces our risk of disease. Vitamin D also acts as a master blueprint for cellular replication, guiding the DNA strands with instructions to accurately divide during mitosis and provides critical guidance to prevent cellular proliferation, a hallmark of cancer metastasis.
Vitamin D Lowers Heart Disease Risk by 47%
The results of a study presented to the American College of Cardiology show that correcting deficient Vitamin D blood levels can reduce the risks associated with coronary artery disease. Study participants were given Vitamin D supplements to raise their blood level well beyond the current minimum erence point and were followed for a period of a year to assess their risk for cardiovascular disease. While this study didn`t provide an explanation for the 47% risk reduction, other research has shown that Vitamin D can lower systemic inflammation throughout the body which promotes healthy arteries and lowers blood pressure.
Ensure You Aren`t Vitamin D Deficient

The only way to accurately determine if you need to supplement is by having your blood tested. Be sure to request a 25(OH)D blood test which yields the most accurate results. Optimal levels are between 50 and 70 ng/mL. If you test below this level you`ll need to supplement with an oil-based gelcap form of Vitamin D. Most people find that 1000 IU is needed to raise the blood level by 10 ng/mL.
Deficient levels of Vitamin D are responsible for millions of needless deaths and much suffering each year. Extensive research has shown exactly how this mega nutrient works on the cellular level to provide lowered risk from many lethal conditions including cancer and heart disease. Those interested in lowering disease risk will want to have a simple blood test and supplement accordingly to reap a multitude of health benefits.
Vitamin D alone does little to protect bone health in postmenopausal women
Wednesday, March 26, 2014
Calcium or combination supplement reduces osteoporosis risk
While calcium supplements noticeably improved bone health in postmenopausal women, vitamin D supplements did not reduce bone turnover, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Societys Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).
Bone turnover is the bodys natural process for breaking down old bone. In young people, the body forms enough new bone to replace what is lost. After age 30, however, bone mass in women begins to decline and the process speeds up after menopause. Osteoporosis develops when the body cannot replace bone as fast as it is broken down.
"Vitamin D and calcium interact to suppress bone turnover by decreasing parathyroid hormone levels," said the studys lead author, John Aloia, MD, of Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY. "This can be beneficial in women who are vitamin D deficient. In women who already are receiving the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D, however, the study found there was no advantage to adding a vitamin D supplement."
The double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, longitudinal factorial design study divided 159 postmenopausal women into four groups. One group received a combination of vitamin D and calcium, one was given 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily, one took 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily and the last group received placebos. To measure the effect supplements had on bone health, researchers measured bone turnover markers, such as parathyroid hormone levels in the blood, over the course of six months. In all, 120 women completed the study.
Researchers found a significant decline in bone turnover markers among women who were given daily calcium supplements. The vitamin D supplements did not have any effect on bone turnover markers, although the supplements did decrease parathyroid hormone levels.
"These findings suggest that vitamin D supplements over the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) do not protect bone health, whereas calcium supplements do have an effect," Aloia said. "Women do need to be cautious about the possibility of vascular side effects from too much calcium and should consult their physicians about whether their diet is adequate or whether they should take supplements at all."
Large Amounts of Vitamin C Increase Risk of Kidney Stones
Sunday, March 2, 2014
Men who consume high levels of vitamin C are at twice the risk of kidney stones than men who do not.
In the current study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the investigators followed over 23,000 Swedish men who were between 45 and 79 years old in 1997 up to the year 2009. None of them had kidney stones at baseline.
Close to 900 of the men took 1,000-milligram doses of vitamin C, and 3 percent of them (31 men) later had kidney stones. Less than 2 percent of those in the rest of the group developed kidney stones.
The researchers adjusted for factors which could undermine the reliability of the findings, such as education levels, ages, and body weights.
They revealed that those men who received the high-dose supplements had an elevated kidney stone risk ranging between 1.7 and 2.2 times.
The authors point out that there are no significantly proven reasons for any person to take such large amounts of vitamin C. The results of the study do not apply to vitamin C that comes from food.
Another outcome of the study was that multivitamin supplements that dont have large doses of vitamin C did not increase the risk of kidney stones.
The authors point out that more studies are needed to back up these findings, and they emphasize that people should not stop consuming vitamin C after reading this report. If you are concerned about your vitamin C intake or any health consequences related to vitamin supplementation, talk to your doctor.
Last year, a study presented at the Endocrine Societys 94th Annual Meeting in Houston, revealed that vitamin C and vitamin D supplements are associated with high calcium levels in the urine and blood,. High urine/blood calcium levels are linked to a higher risk of kidney stones.
Vitamin D Potency Varies Widely in Dietary Supplements
Monday, February 10, 2014
Vitamin D supplement potency varies widely, and the amount of vitamin D in over-the-counter and compounded supplements does not necessarily match the amount listed on the label, according to a research letter published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
The analysis showed that the amount of vitamin D in these supplements ranged from 9 percent to 146 percent of the amount listed on the label. Not only was there variation among different brands and manufacturers, but also among different pills from the same bottle.
"We were surprised by the variation in potency among these vitamin D pills," says Erin S. LeBlanc, MD, MPH, lead author and investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. "The biggest worry is for someone who has low levels of vitamin D in their blood. If they are consistently taking a supplement with little vitamin D in it, they could face health risks."
According to a recent editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, more than 100 million Americans spend a combined $28 billion on vitamins, herbs and supplements each year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering new safety guidelines for some supplements but, for the most part, the industry remains unregulated.
Some manufacturers participate in a voluntary quality verification program operated by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention -- an independent, nonprofit organization that sets public standards for the quality of dietary supplements. In order to receive the USP verification mark, manufacturers facilities undergo annual good manufacturing-practice audits, and their products are tested for quality, potency and purity. Dr. LeBlanc and her colleagues included one supplement from a USP Verified manufacturer in their sample. They found the amount of vitamin D in pills from that bottle was generally more accurate than the other bottles tested.
"The USP verification mark may give consumers some reassurance that the amount of vitamin D in those pills is close to the amount listed on the label," said Dr. LeBlanc. "There are not many manufacturers that have the USP mark, but it may be worth the extra effort to look for it."
Vitamin D supplements could help prevent mobility problems
Tuesday, February 4, 2014
Vitamin D-deficient older individuals are more likely to struggle with everyday tasks such as dressing or climbing stairs, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Societys Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).
Scientists estimate many as 90 percent of older individuals are vitamin D deficient. The vitamin – typically absorbed from sunlight or on a supplementary basis through diet – plays a key role in bone and muscle health. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a decline in bone density, muscle weakness, osteoporosis or broken bones.
"Seniors who have low levels of vitamin D are more likely to have mobility limitations and to see their physical functioning decline over time," said the studys lead author, Evelien Sohl, MSc, of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. "Older individuals with these limitations are more likely to be admitted to nursing homes and face a higher risk of mortality."
Using data from an ongoing Dutch cohort study (The Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam), the researchers examined among two groups – 762 people between the ages of 65 and 88, and 597 people between the ages of 55 and 65 – over the course of six years. Using blood test results, the subjects were split into groups with the highest, moderate and lowest vitamin D levels. To assess mobility limitations, participants were asked about their ability to perform routine tasks, including sitting down and standing up from a chair or walking outside for 5 minutes without resting.
Among the older group of participants, people with the lowest vitamin D levels were 1.7 times more likely to have at least one functional limitation compared to those with the highest vitamin D levels. In the younger cohort, individuals with low vitamin D levels were twice as likely to have at least one physical limitation.
While the majority of the people in the older cohorts top two vitamin D groups did not report any physical limitations, 70 percent of the people with the lowest vitamin D levels had at least one limitation.
In addition, the study found vitamin D-deficient individuals were more likely to develop additional limitations over time. The older cohort reported more mobility issues after three years, while the younger cohort developed additional limitations over the course of six years.
"The findings indicate low vitamin D levels in older individuals may contribute to the declining ability to perform daily activities and live independently," Sohl said. "Vitamin D supplementation could provide a way to prevent physical decline, but the idea needs to be explored further with additional studies."
